A lovely, Swedish village. Although the name sounds French, Marquette was settled by the Swedes in the 1880's. Their picturesque city still bears the signs of Swedish culture. The downtown area is a source of community pride. Facades of stately old brick businesses feature recessed entry ways made of cast-iron column; pressed tin; glass and bricks that have been restored and painted in their original colors. Local artists have created murals which chronicle the passage of time and the changes the community has experienced. These may be seen on the sides of downtown businesses.
Marquette is a busy place. Volunteers keep the
calendar filled with special events.
These events are well attended by Swedes and non-Swedes alike and, in the case of the Swedish supper, you may find yourself waiting in line to be served. Not to worry, there are musician's, art exhibits and friendly folks to keep you entertained
